Ahmedabad (Gujarat) is one of the most liveliest cities in India. It is located in the northern part of Gujarat, towards the western region of the country.

Ahmedabad got its name from Sultan Ahmad Shah who founded it in 1411 AD. Ahmedabad city has witnessed the rule of different dynasties, right from Sultanate and Mughal rule to Maratha and British rule. It was seized by Emperor Akbar in 1572, and incorporated into the great Mughal Empire. Ahmedabad became a major business hub during the Mughal period till the expiry of Aurangzeb in 1707.

The climate Ahmedabad is mostly hot and humid. Winters are cool and pleasant but summers are extremely dry. The city of Ahmedabad experiences good rainfall during the monsoon season during the months from July to September.

Ahmedabad is one of the largest industrial hubs of western India, enjoying a prominent position on the industrial map of the country owing to its importance as a base of trade, commerce and industry. Other major industries include chemicals, pharmaceuticals and engineering ancillaries. The skilled human resources and labourers from different parts of Gujarat and neighboring states are integral to the economy of the city. A majority of the working-age citizens of the city are traders and businessmen.

Ahmedabad airport has both national and international flights, it is 10 km north of the city. Almost all the airlines operating in India have their services to this city. Public transportation in Ahmedabad city is provided by Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services known as AMTS. AMTS operates regular buses within the city and also covering some of the nearby districts and villages. The major station in Ahmedabad is Idgah Station. Superfast and passenger trains terminate and start from the railway station. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are much faster ways of transport. Rickshaws can take commuters to narrow alleyways.

The education scenario in Ahmedabad is at par with other metros of India, it has an excellent education system. Ahmedabad is also home to some prestigious colleges and institutions whose reputation is wide spread across India in particular and the world in general. The education system is simple, once a student completes secondary education, he can enroll in Junior College or what is commonly known as Pre-University. The city has a number of established reputed educational institutions, notably the globally acclaimed Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM–A) established in 1961.

For administrative purposes Ahmedabad is divided into 5 zones and 43 wards. But in fact it is divided by the River Sabarmati into two regions - Western and Eastern part. Eastern part - the old city, including the central part of Bhadra. Typical for the old city are also packed bazaars, the Main railway station and the General Post office are also situated there. Westren part - also called the modern city, thriving industrial and business center. It developed during the colonial period, related to the construction of 2 bridges that connect the Old and the Modern part of Ahmedabad- Ellis Bridge and Nehru Bridge.

Ahmedabad is known for its beautiful monuments of historical and archaeological importance. The elegant architecture of its mosques and mausoleums is a unique blend of Muslim and Hindu Styles. Ahmedabad has a number of tourist attractions. Chief among them is the Sabarmati Ashram, the headquarters of Mahatma Gandhi during India’s Independence struggle. The Calico Museum of Textiles, widely regarded as one of the finest textile museums in the world, was constructed in 1949.

Ahmedabad – “the Manchester of the East” has a diversified culture where people from all walks of life participate in the cultural race from dance-drama to food and festivals. The kite flying festival (Uttarayan) is celebrated on January 14 every year. The nine nights of Navaratri are celebrated in a traditional manner with people performing garba at pre-arranged venues, which is the folk dance of Gujarat. The religious festivals like Deepavali, Holi, Eid ul-Fitr and Christmas are celebrated with great enthusiasm.
